Paper on Pulse Shaping Tops the Competition

At the January 24, 2006, technical meeting of the International Biomedical Optics Society (IBOS), a paper presented by lead author Eric R. Tkaczyk was selected as "best student paper" by the Biomedical Optics Symposium (BiOS) of the Photonics West conference. The conference is sponsored by the IBOS, a technical group of the International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE), which puts out the Journal of Biomedical Optics.

The winning paper is titled "Increasing two-photon fluorescence signals by coherent control" by Eric R. Tkaczyk, Augustin Mignot, Jing Yong Ye, Istvan Majoros, James R. Baker, Jr., and Theodore B. Norris.

The other three finalists represented Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Switzerland), Utrecht University (the Netherlands), and Northeastern University. Of the 2,700 papers at Photonics West, 1,139 were presented in BiOS, although the number that were actually entered in the student paper competition is unknown.

The BiOS symposium is described as "the premier annual international forum for discussions and announcements of technical/clinical and educational/pedagogical developments in the use of lasers, optical fibers, spectroscopic diagnostic techniques, and related areas of optical medicine."
